Celebrating 10 years as DFT
|
|
DFT has a long history, tracing its roots back to Fernseh AG in 1929, with the first film scanners (called telecines in those
days) developed in 1967. Several company names later (we’ve been called Bosch Fernseh, BTS, Philips Digital Video Systems, Thomson Broadcast
and Grass Valley over the years), we’re proud to be able to celebrate our 10-year milestone as Digital Film Technology (DFT).
This summer we celebrated in style! It was lovely to see employees, both past and present, with their families, enjoying the fabulous food
and live entertainment. A good afternoon was had by all!

DFT welcomes new Managing Director
|
|
Recently joining us as our new Managing Director, is Gunter Weidlich. Gunter may be a familiar name to some of you, as he was one of DFT’s
founding managing directors back in 2012 when he was involved with the Spirit 4K and Scanity film scanner development. Gunter combines deep
technical and product understanding with a desire to put the customer at the front and centre of what we do - it’s great to have him back
at DFT as we head into our next phase of growth and evolution.

IBC 2022 success!
IBC 2022 was a huge focus for DFT – we were keen to make the most of it, as it was the first big international event for most
people after a couple of years of travel restrictions due to the pandemic. It did not disappoint and was very well attended in addition to being hugely enjoyable.
Our large stand meant that we were able to show off DFT POLAR HQ, our brand-new, future-proof, film scanner and demonstrate some impressive high-resolution scanning.
We gave multiple live 8K demonstrations so that our guests could see the commercial benefits of 8K over 4K deliverables.
Alongside DFT POLAR HQ, we also demonstrated our high-speed flagship scanner, Scanity HDR, OXSCAN 65mm and Sondor Versa. The big stand also meant that more of our
DFT people were able to experience the IBC atmosphere. Overall, it was a great experience, and we’re very much looking forward to the next big international event!

NAB New York
Hot on the heels of IBC success, we were eager to showcase our new DFT POLAR HQ over the pond. At New York’s NAB in October we introduced the new DFT Polar
HQ to the US market and it lived up to expectations, as we received some great feedback from the customers, post houses and archive facilities that came to see us.

AMIA – Annual Conference
AMIA’s annual conference was held in Pittsburg during December 2022. AMIA is the world’s largest international association of professional media archivists,
and the event included presentations, screenings and workshops from a range of global manufacturers and vendors.
This year, DFT exhibited remotely, that took the AMIA members from our stand in Pittsburgh straight to the demo
suite at the DFT headquarters in Germany - virtually! Attendees were able to join live product demonstrations of
our latest scanner, DFT POLAR HQ, from our purpose-built demo suite at the factory, as well as take part in a lively
Question and Answer session. We had many interesting conversations and technical discussions - despite the almost 7,000 km distance and 6 hours time difference between us!
|
What’s happening in 2023?
We’re still firming up our plans for 2023, but for now, please add the following dates to your diary – it would be great to see you:
NAB 2023, Las Vegas: April 15 – 19th
Broadcast Asia, Singapore: June 7-9th

Digital Orchard use Scanity for ‘The Eternal Daughter’
Making its debut at the London Film Festival in October 2022 and nominated for the Best Film at Venice Film Festival, this film features Tilda Swinton in the lead role in a story of a middle-aged daughter and her elderly mother as they confront long buried
secrets as they return to their former family home. Directed by Joanna Hogg and shot on 16mm, the film was scanned by Digital Orchard at 4K using Scanity.
|
|
Digital Orchard use Scanity for ‘She Always Wins’
Directed by Hazel McKibbin and premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2022, this film captures the story of a young woman, Stella who brings her new boyfriend, Luke to his first family visit. In a complicated dance of dominance, deference and
self-diminishment, the couple's dynamic is revealed in an innocuous game of backgammon. Shot on 35mm and scanned by Digital Orchard at 4K using Scanity.

Digital Orchard use Scanity for ‘Gods Creatures’
God's Creatures is a psychological drama set in an Irish windswept fishing village where a mother tells a lie to protect her beloved son that rips apart their family and close-knit community. Directed by Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer, this film was
premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2022, and now available for streaming on Prime Video and Apple TV. Shot on 35mm and scanned by Digital Orchard at 4K using Scanity.

The Net (1916) – Rediscovered and updated using Scanity
The Net is a rediscovered 5-reel feature melodrama 1916 film from Thanhouser Film Company and Preservation. In ‘The Net’, a muscular young fisherman rescues two girls from drowning and soon finds himself engaged to both girls, one of whom is a big-city
thief. The "bad" girl really goes to town when the fisherman inherits a fortune, but it is the "good" girl -- who happens to be his childhood sweetheart -- who wins out in the end.
This film was largely forgotten until a pristine nitrate print, complete with all five reels that included original colour tints, was unearthed in the National Library of Norway archives. The nitrate print was scanned using Scanity at 4K resolution and 25% overscan.

Sound of Metal (2019) released in 4K
Criterion has recently remastered and issued Sound of Metal as a 4K Blu-ray release. In this film, a heavy-metal drummer's life is thrown into freefall when he begins to lose his hearing. This new digital transfer was created in 4K resolution on Scanity film scanner
from the 35mm original camera negatives.

...And Finally – Meet the Team!
We’ve been growing and expanding the team at DFT and we thought you’d like know a bit more about some of our new team members. Here we introduce Petra!
|
|
Name: Petra Raithel
What do you do at DFT?:
I work in the sales support team and with marketing – focussing on trade fair planning and events. The main purpose of my work is to support the sales team and make
sure that DFT has a good visibility at events and trade shows.
I joined DFT in 2021 and really enjoy working for such a friendly and fun organization.
What is your favourite movie and why?
One of my favorite movies is Casablanca, it´s a mixture of melodrama adventure and crime film.
If you could invite a movie star to dinner, who would it be and why?
If I was hosting a dinner party, there isn’t any one movie star that I could single out for an invitation (there are so many!), although I would love to be invited to the Oscars!
What is your favourite cinema snack and drink?
My favorite cinema snack is popcorn, but at home on my own sofa I prefer munching salted pretzels, with a cool drink to hand.
