AMIA Conference
14-17 November 2023, Tulsa, OK, USA
We had a great time at the annual AMIA conference in November
– it’s always a privilege to spend time with this esteemed community of moving
image archive experts and hear about your many and interesting film
digitization projects!
As an exhibitor and preservation circle sponsor to AMIA, alongside
our sister company Prasad North America, DFT presented a technical paper on ‘Resolution of 35mm Motion Picture Film’ in the conference program and hosted remote live demos to demonstrate the
new DFT POLAR HQ native 8K film scanner, which was broadcast live to a large 8K screen at the conference from the DFT demo
suite in Germany.

NAB 2024
Last year we showcased the brand new DFT Polar WetGate at NAB in Las Vegas.
We have decided to go a different way this year: instead of exhibiting our latest pro-ducts at NAB, we will embark on a road trip throughout the US to visit customers and inform them first-hand about new develop-ments at DFT. We believe it's the best way to cater to our customer's needs and continue to provide tailormade solutions.
We're starting after NAB in mid April in the LA region. Please get in touch with us here to schedule a meeting.

Recent Scanity installations include the National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) in Malaysia and the
National Film Archive and Audiovisual Institute (FINA)
in Poland, which also included a WetGate. We have also delivered and installed a number of Sondor Resonances, including Cinecittà and Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografica (both in Italy).

A major highlight last year was DFT's involvement in a huge project at Germany’s Federal Film Archive, Bundesarchiv, in Berlin.
At the centre of the workflow in the new facility are six DFT film scanners, which support workflows for film restoration and color-correction, using a high bandwidth SAN storage to digitize the Bundesarchiv’s large historical inventory.
The installation includes three Scanity HDR scanners and three DFT POLAR HQ scanners, all equipped with DFT’s WetGate technology.

Filmoteka Narodowa Instytut Audiowizualny (FINA), the Polish National Film Archive, has recently installed DFT’s Scanity Film Scanner including a WetGate system at it’s facility in Warsaw.
As part of a major initiative called “Digital Poland”, which was co-financed by the European Union, FINA has invested in a new 4K film scanning facility, which includes DFT’s Scanity 4K film scanner with WetGate technology for both 16mm and 35mm film.
The new facility has so far worked on hundreds of film materials, many from the nitro collection, which were at risk of loss due to the progressive decay of the media. Read the full article here

"The Complete And Utter History Of Britain" - Rediscovered and scanned on Scanity by R3Store Studios
Lost TV series The Complete And Utter History
Of Britain (1969) has been unearthed in the ITV archives, despite previous
public consensus believing only the first two episodes survived. This 6-part
television series helped bring about the formation of Monty Python later
the same year, with the addition of John Cleese. The missing 4 episodes had
been mis-catalogued for 54 years but have now been restored for the world to
watch again. The film was scanned, using DFT’s Scanity, once it had been
cleaned and repaired. See a clip here and read more here.

Swedish horror classic "Hour of the wolf" remastered using
Scanity
Hour of the Wolf (1968) - Swedish
psychological horror, explores the disappearance of an artist who lives on a
remote island with his wife. According to reviews, this remastered version,
released by the Criterion collection: “… fairly bursts with fascinatingly dense
and multilayered imagery… detail levels are beautifully precise

well modulated gray scale.” Read more here.

...And finally - Meet the Team!
DFT has some great people on their staff and we thought you’d like know a bit more about some of our team members. Here we introduce Ben:
|
|
|
Name: Benjamin (Ben) Kratz
What do you do at DFT?
I'm a “Senior Customer Service Engineer” at DFT and I help customers with their questions and problems. As part of my job, I go onsite to customers to install, maintain and service DFT equipment. In addition to that, I also run onsite training- and refresher-courses for customers.
What is your favorite movie? Le
salaire de la peur [The Wages of Fear] (1953)
If you could invite a movie
star to dinner, who would it be and why?
I'm not really into stars and actors.*
What is your favourite cinema
snack and drink?
Salty Popcorn and a beer.
If you’re not at DFT or in the
movies, what else do you enjoy? I mostly enjoy being outside: walking, hiking or cycling. Cooking and photography are also some hobbies of mine.
Note: * Because Ben couldn't decide on an actor he would like to have dinner with, we at DFT decided that we would nominate Christopher Nolan for this dinner because they would definitely have a lot of fun together. It is also worth mentioning that Ben probably has the most comprehensive overview of the best micro-breweries for premium beers in the world. And we really mean anywhere in the world...
