Recent Scanity
installations include Video Mercury Films in Madrid, Spain and Cinegrell in Berlin, Germany. We have - again - also delivered a
number of the latest Sondor Resonances system, including the British Film Institute (BFI) and the Slovak Film Institute (SFU).
Video Mercury Films S. A. decides for Scanity
Video Mercury Films (VMF) in Madrid, Spain has recently finished installation for their latest investment, a DFT Scanity film scanner. We spoke to Naiara Illescas, who has worked with the Scanity at Video Mercury Films over the past weeks.
What have you mainly used Scanity for in the past few weeks?
"We have used the DFT Scanity for digitization of film that is also
partly damaged, and the results are really good. We mainly used it so far to
digitize 16mm film, but also for 35mm nitrate film negatives. Using the alpha
channel has provided us a great advantage improving the scanning results compared to before, as a lot of
the defects and dirt in the emulsion are reduced on the fly during the
digitization process."
What do you love most about working with Scanity?
"One of the most remarkable things to mention about the Scanity is the
definition it brings out of the negative and its crystal-clear focus. The
software provides you a lot of useful options during the scanning process, so you can be
more specific about how you expect to transfer the images. I find it also
convenient to have a small touch screen monitor to be able to execute some
commands in front of the machine."

Many movies are still produced on film - and for good reason. DFT's film scanners ensure that the subtle details of the film emulsion is captured in the best possible way from the original camera negative, providing superb results for the downstream post-production process. Here are a few of the
latest projects completed by our customers, all using DFT film scanners.

"Society of the Snow"
In 1972,
Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashes over the Andes. On board was a rugby
team that was due to take part in a match in Chile. Only 29 passengers survive
the direct crash into the -30 degree cold snowy desert and the place where they
are stranded is not visible to rescuers. For 72 days, the casualties have to
fight for survival and make horrendous decisions.
Society of
the Snow received positive reviews. It won 12 awards including Best Picture and
Best Director at the 38th Goya Awards. At the 96th Academy Awards, it was
nominated for the Best International Feature Film, representing Spain. The film
closed the 80th Venice International Film Festival in an Out of Competition
slot. Film was scanned at Cinelab, London. More

"The Fabelmans"
The
Fabelmans is a 2022 American semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama film
directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, who co-wrote the screenplay with
Tony Kushner. Loosely based on Spielberg's adolescence and first years as a
filmmaker, the plot is told through an original story of the fictional Sammy
Fabelman, a young aspiring filmmaker who explores how the power of films can
help him see the truth about his dysfunctional family and those around him.
"The
Fabelmans," is primarily shot on film.
Spielberg, known for his preference for traditional filmmaking techniques,
chose to use 35mm film for the production. Dailies and look creation was done with Scanity at Picture Shop in Hollywood, California. More

... And finally - Meet the Team
|
|
At DFT, we’re proud to have a team of exceptional
talent driving our innovation forward. We thought you’d like to get to know
some of the great people behind our success! Meet our Application Engineer Olaf:
|
|
|
Name:
Olaf Legenbauer
What do you do
at DFT?
I am an Application Engineer at DFT and my main task is to review and test new
software and hardware for our film scanners. Due to my many years of experience in
post-production, I am also a kind of interpreter between our customers and our
R&D department.
What is your
favorite movie and why?
Oh, that's not
easy. There's more than one. I like Nosferatu (1922), Diva (1981), Gattaca
(1997), American Hustle (2013), Arrival (2016)...
Because of
the look, the plot, the humour or simply because they still captivate me
the third time (or more) I watch them. I'm afraid I'll
think of many more movies as soon as I've handed in the questionnaire...
If you could
invite a movie star to dinner, who would it be and why?
I would prefer
to be invited by a star, no matter who. Why? Why not?
What is your
favorite cinema snack and drink?
I can't resist
nuts, flavoured or not, preferably roasted. Accompanied by beer or wine (side note: I'm not afraid of German red wine - Pinot Noir, yay!), for softdrink - only
water.
If you’re not
at DFT or in the movies, what else do you enjoy?
I like hiking,
cycling, reading, cooking and extensive breakfasts at the weekends.
